About Thrombolysis/Thrombectomy

Thrombolysis/Thrombectomy Q & A

What is Venous Thrombolysis?

Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy are both catheter based techniques used to restore blood flow to specific areas starved of blood due to a blood clot.

Thrombolysis is reserved for high clot burden with risk of migration to vital areas that can be life threatening.  A powerful blood thinner (tPA) is administered locally within the clot to soften and rapidly dissolve the obstruction.  Specialized enhanced catheters (EKOS) facilitate break-up of the clot by delivered high frequency ultrasound waves to enhance drug dispersion to disrupt covalent blonds.

What is Venous Thrombectomy?

Thrombectomy is the mechanical removal of clot obstructing the flow of blood, typically by aspiration using negative pressure through a small tube inserted in the blood vessel.
