A PTA (peripheral angioplasty) is a procedure that involves inflating a balloon in an artery or vein to dilate the respective blood vessel to allow for better blood flow.

Balloon angioplasty can be used to smash plaque and improve areas of narrowing simply by inflation alone. Balloons can also be coated with drug to reduce re-narrowing of the artery and decrease the need for stenting. Balloons are typically delivered through a small tube (catheter) on or over a wire and can also be used to prepare for stenting.
