About CardioMEMS

CardioMEMS Q & A

What is Wireless Hemodynamic Monitoring System (CardioMEMS)?

The CardioMEMS is a monitoring system that is used in patients with a history of heart failure, to measure the heart rate and pressure in the pulmonary artery (carries blood from the heart to the lungs), so that your doctor may assess heart function and preempt heart failure. A rise in pulmonary artery pressure is an early indicator for heart failure that manifests before other symptoms develop.

The CardioMEMS system consists of a small sensor, implanted in the pulmonary artery with the help of a delivery system or a catheter, which is inserted through an artery in your leg to reach the heart. The sensor functions without batteries, and wirelessly transmits pressure and heart rate to an external patient electronic system that is read by your doctor who can modify your treatment as needed, to prevent heart failure.
